Registering a marriage (Registration of Marriage – ROM) at the Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN) branch in Dutamas (often associated with the High Court/Kompleks Mahkamah Kuala Lumpur area) follows the standard civil procedure for non-Muslims in Malaysia.
Here is a guide for ROM registration at JPN.
1. Requirements for ROM
- Applicability: Non-Muslim couples (both must be 18 or older).
- Presence: Both parties must appear in person to submit documents at JPN.
- Notice Period: Application must be submitted at least 21 days before the ceremony.
- Validity: The marriage must be solemnized within 6 months from the date of application.
2. Documents Required
You will need to bring the following to JPN:
- Form JPN.KC01F: Filled and signed (available at JPN).
- MyKad: Original and one photocopy (for Malaysians).
- Passport: Original and one photocopy of the page with personal details and arrival date (for non-citizens).
- Photographs: One coloured passport-sized photo for each applicant.
- Witnesses: Two witnesses (aged 21+) are required for the actual ceremony. Their IC copies may be needed during application.
- Status Proof: Divorce certificate or death certificate of spouse (if previously married).
3. Procedure at JPN Dutamas
- Submit Application: Go to the JPN office to submit the completed JPN.KC01F form and required documents.
- Verification: The officer will verify your documents, and you may need to swear an oath (Commissioner of Oath).
- Display Notice: The notice of marriage will be displayed at JPN for 21 days.
- Schedule Ceremony: Select a date and time for the solemnization (after the 21-day notice period).
- Solemnization: Return on the chosen date to sign the register and collect your marriage certificate.
4. Fees
- Application Fee: Generally RM10.00 for the marriage certificate (JPN.KC03).
- Registration Fee: A total of around RM30.00 is often cited for the entire process.
5. Important Tips
- Dress Code: Dress formally (business attire/smart casual) for the registration, as it is a government office.
- Location: While this covers JPN, many people in KL also choose to register at the Thean Hou Temple or other authorized assistant registrars.
- Operating Hours: Check JPN’s official website for the operating hours of the specific branch in Dutamas.
Disclaimer: Procedures and fees are subject to change by JPN. It is recommended to check the official JPN website or call the branch directly before visiting.
